Overview

Category Clash turns the familiar countries-and-cities word game into a quick online competition. Every round gives the room one letter and a shared set of categories, then asks players to find valid answers before the timer runs out.

I designed and built the product end to end: real-time rooms, answer validation, scoring, achievements, Coins, avatars, stickers, profile banners, and the visual identity surrounding the game.

Key decisions

  1. 01

Made the server authoritative for room state, scoring, rewards, wallet balances, cosmetic ownership, and purchase fulfillment so modified clients cannot grant themselves progress.

  2. 02

Designed short round and results loops around mobile play, with reconnect handling, duplicate-action protection, answer challenges, and clear feedback when a room changes state.

  3. 03

Kept Coins cosmetic-only: players earn them through completed online games and achievements, then spend them on permanent avatars, stickers, and country banners.

  4. 04

Built a playful identity around opposing category brackets and a central letter tile, carrying the same purple, coral, yellow, and mint system through the app icon, store, profiles, and game website.

Outcome

Produced a signed Android release build and a tested multiplayer foundation backed by Supabase and PostgreSQL.

Prepared the product for Google Play with server-verified billing boundaries, privacy and account-deletion flows, and a dedicated public game site. The first public release is currently in development.
